Dr. Manas Datta is a highly experienced Consultant Paediatrician with extensive expertise in Paediatric Gastroenterology and Paediatric Allergy. Dr Datta graduated (MBBS) from the prestigious Calcutta University in India. Dr Datta subsequently completed MD (Doctor of Medicine) and DNB (Diplomate of National Board) in Paediatrics from India. Subsequently, Dr Datta became a Member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (MRCPCH) and later a Fellow of the Royal College (FRCPCH). Dr Datta completed his higher specialist training (CCT) through the East of England Deanery in Cambridge.
Dr Datta has been a Consultant Paediatrician at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford since 2010. Before this role, he worked as a Consultant Paediatrician at the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. Dr Datta is the lead for Paediatric Gastroenterology at his trust. He also leads the Child Death Review in NHS Mid Essex. Dr Datta was Clinical Director for Children’s Services for six years and has received multiple clinical excellence awards at his trust over the years.
Dr Datta has extensive experience in General Paediatrics, Paediatric Gastroenterology, and Paediatric Allergy. His special interests include food allergies, feeding problems in neonates and infants, abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhoea, gastro-oesophageal reflux, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Coeliac Disease, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He also conducts skin prick tests (allergy tests) for various food and environmental allergens in his clinic. Over the years, Dr Datta has treated numerous complex gastrointestinal conditions in children from Essex and beyond. Recently, he appeared on BBC News (May 2025) to discuss the treatment of an Essex teenager with a rare digestive condition, whom he has been treating since birth.
In addition to his clinical and leadership roles, Dr. Datta is deeply involved in medical education. Dr Datta is a senior examiner for the Membership Examination of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (MRCPCH) and participates in various clinical examination diets nationally and internationally. Previously, he served as a Royal College tutor. Additionally, he is a member of the editorial board for Paediatric Care Online (PCO), an online healthcare tool provided by the RCPCH. Dr Datta sits on many interview and assessment panels as a representative of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).
