About
I am a friendly, enthusiastic consultant, passionate about the speciality of dermatology, and committed to offering the best possible service to patients and GPs. I trained at Edinburgh and Oxford Universities, and decided to pursue a career in dermatology early in clinical training. After qualification I deliberately sampled a wide range of medical specialities, from general practice to intensive care medicine, to ensure a broad perspective before specialising.
Specialist dermatology training was undertaken in several departments in the West Midlands and London, yielding two completed research projects, numerous peer-reviewed publications, presentations to specialist societies, and regional and national prizes.
Work-related interests include all aspects of general dermatology, in particular inflammatory dermatoses (rashes), as well as special interests in male genital skin disease and psychocutaneous medicine. I feel comfortable helping patients with complex skin disorders, but equally consider no skin problem to be too small.
Medical education has always been a great passion. I spent three years as a Junior Research Fellow at New College, Oxford University, with a remit to provide teaching for all clinical medical students in the college. Since then I have completed a Masters degree in medical education at Warwick University, and I am actively engaged with teaching and training at all levels.
I greatly value and reflect on all patient feedback to help me to continuously improve my practice. Please review feedback from my patients at the iWantGreat Care website.
Diseases, Medical Tests and Treatments
I have undertaken many thousands of skin biopsies over the years and am happy to advise on, and perform the following procedures: dermoscopy examination, cryotherapy, shave excision, curettage and cautery, punch biopsy, incisional biopsy. I do not undertake surgery for cysts, lipomas or major skin cancers, but will happily offer assessment, advice and guidance for such conditions, involving local surgical colleagues as needed.
I am fully trained and highly experienced in all aspects of adult general dermatology. This includes the diagnosis and management of all inflammatory skin disease (rashes such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, urticaria, vitiligo, rosacea etc) as well as skin lesions (benign lumps and bumps, and all skin cancers). I have additional specialist expertise in male genital dermatology (dealing with conditions such as penile lichen sclerosus and genital dysaesthesia) and psychodermatology (the overlap between skin disease and conditions impacting on mental health). I offer traditional face-to-face consultations, as well as video and telephone consultations, depending on patient choice.
