About
So, let's get you better! I always try to get treatment started at the same time as arranging any tests that might be needed.
I help patients with a broad range of problems ranging from bloating/gas, troublesome bowels, tummy pain and Irritable Bowel (IBS); Acid reflux; passing blood and concerns about bowel cancer risk.
I do a lot of consultations by phone, as many conditions do not need for you to come to the hospital; but, the choice is always there for you.
I try to do as much follow up as possible (sending on results, reports etc.) by email to save on unnecessary trips for you to the hospital and unnecessary expense for your insurance policy. I also avoid any invasive tests where there is a good alternative available. If you are self-paying, or have limited insurance cover, I can highlight the tests that could be done through your NHS family doctor- please let me know.
One important thing to mention first: unfortuntely, I do not see those insured through Aviva, WPA or Allianz. Apologies for this. Also, if I think that it might be better for you to see someone else who is better placed to help you than me, I shall let you know- that is why I like to see the referral letter in advance, if possible (please email to: taz.shirley@medicalfederation.co.uk).
I am recommended by BUPA's "Open referral" and Platinum service where >90% of patients say both the "Consultant" and "Quality of Care" was Very good/Excellent. I am also part of a similar scheme offered by AXA.
My endoscopy results are independently audited every six months and have been always consistently above national standards. Patient feedback and reviews are also performed independently and published on the government's PHIN website (consistently >99% recommended: https://www.phin.org.uk/profiles/consultants/john-meenan-129555).
I have a particular interest in endoscopy, colonoscopy and the advanced technique of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) which allows detailed views of all the organs around the stomach, including pancreas, whilst performing an endoscopy
I am a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Guy's and St.Thomas' Hospital, London, where I was Chief of the Department for six years during which, along with local patients and GP's, I modernized how care is delivered. I have been chairman of the UK/Ireland EUS Users' Group and a member of the International Committee of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).
I qualified with Honours from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (1986) and trained in Gastroenterology at St. James's Hospital, Dublin (1989-1992), the Academic Medical Centre, Amsterdam (1992-1996) and at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital, London (1996-1999). I have published research papers and text-books on topics including the immunology of IBD (PhD, University of Amsterdam); large bowel folate metabolism (MD, Trinity College, Dublin) and endoscopic ultrasound.
I have maintained and built on his skills by intermittent attachments at international centres in Japan, France and Germany as well as attending and presenting at international conferences and medical summits.
I was twice awarded the prestigious "Teachers" award by the American Endoscopy Society (ASGE) in 2007 and 2013. I have been honoured with Fellowships by the Royal Colleges of Physicians of both England and Ireland.
