He went on to undertake airway allergy and disease training at Hammersmith Hospital, general allergy training at St Mary's Hospital, and skin allergy training at St Thomas Hospital.
In 2008, he earned a PhD thesis prize from the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, for his work on allergens in the allergic airways. He continued with further research training in nasal allergy before taking up his consultant post in 2008.
Dr Kariyawasam is an honorary senior lecturer at both the MRC and Asthma UK Centre in Allergic Mechanisms of Asthma and University College London.
