About Dr Giampaolo Gini
Mr Giampaolo Gini is a passionate general ophthalmologist specialising in retina and glaucoma surgery at Nuffield Health Haywards Heath Hospital. He prides himself on delivering the very best care for his patients and is only satisfied once the very best result attainable has been achieved. Mr Gini has extensive surgical expertise, having performed over 16,000 cataract and glaucoma surgeries and 14,000 retinal surgeries. He currently performs surgery in Italy and Switzerland as well as the UK and has been invited to demonstrate his surgical techniques in a number of different countries. Mr Gini is a keen educator and has been part of the European Vitreo Retina Training School for the past 18 years as well as a fellowship trainer at Southampton University Hospital NHS Trust. He is also the current President of the European Vitreo Retinal Society, which has 800 members from 57 countries. During the course of his career, Mr Gini has earned various national and international accolades, including the prestigious Italian Ophthalmological Society Award which he has won twice, the Treacher-Collins Award from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and the Reis-Buckler Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists. He is also well-known for being one of the first surgeons to question the findings of the Early Vitrectomy Study for the treatment of serious eye infections (endophthalmitis) which paved the way for further advances in the field.
