About

I am a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine with additional accreditation in Internal Medicine (both since 2007). My NHS practice is based at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London and I hold an Honorary Senior Lecturership at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. I completed a PhD in laboratory research in the field of pulmonary fibrosis. I work in a research-active Unit; my key research areas are in the pathophysiological characterization of interstitial lung diseases (ILD), assessment of their impact on those affected and evaluation of risk predictors of poor outcome relating to different forms of ILD. I am also involved in original COVID-19 research and am part of a group of clinicians studying the determinants of COVID-19-associated death. Part of this work has led to the development of a pre-hospital mortality prediction score called SOARS (Thorax 2021). Within my main ILD practice, about 20% of referrals are requests for a second or third opinion, typically because for complex or difficult-to-diagnose conditions.
