About
Dr David Begley is a Consultant Cardiologist and specialist in cardiac rhythm management at Royal Papworth Hospital. He has extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders and is particularly recognised for his expertise in cardiac electrophysiology, catheter ablation and cardiac device therapy.
Dr Begley graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1994 with a degree in Medicine (MB ChB). He completed his early medical training in South East Scotland, where he developed a strong interest in cardiology. He subsequently spent three years conducting clinical research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, focusing on the investigation and management of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition affecting the heart muscle. This work led to the award of a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Edinburgh.
During this period he developed a particular interest in cardiac electrophysiology and catheter ablation, drawn to the ability of these procedures to provide long-term or permanent treatment for many heart rhythm disorders that can cause distressing symptoms. After returning to the United Kingdom, he undertook specialist cardiology training through the Northern Deanery rotation, based primarily at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle and James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. There he completed advanced subspecialty training in cardiac electrophysiology and cardiac device therapy.
Dr Begley was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at Papworth Hospital in 2007. He later served as Clinical Lead for Cardiac Electrophysiology and Device Therapy from 2011 to 2016 and as Clinical Divisional Director for Cardiology between 2018 and 2025. His clinical expertise includes the ablation of complex cardiac arrhythmias, implantation and management of cardiac devices, and device extraction techniques. He has a particular interest in treating ventricular tachycardia associated with ischaemic heart disease and cardiomyopathies.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Begley is actively involved in medical education and professional development. He serves as Undergraduate Programme Director in Cardiology, acts as an educational supervisor for foundation trainees and is a Senior Clinical Tutor at the University of Cambridge. He also represents consultants on the British Heart Rhythm Society Council and has contributed to the development and revision of the Society’s accreditation examinations.
Dr Begley’s research interests focus on improving techniques for the treatment of complex arrhythmias, particularly through advances in catheter ablation. Through his clinical practice, research and educational roles, he continues to contribute to the development of modern cardiac rhythm management.
