About Dr Atir Khan
Dr. Atir Khan is a consultant physician specialising in diabetes and endocrinology, with over 25 years of experience in managing complex endocrine disorders and diabetes. Renowned for his expertise in the treatment of conditions related to calcium metabolism as well as disorders of the adrenal glands, pituitary gland, and thyroid, Dr. Khan graduated in 1991 and completed his specialty training in diabetes, endocrinology, and general medicine with the Manchester Deanery. He later earned an MD in clinical research from the University of Manchester in 2003. Dr. Khan has served as a consultant physician for many years, with his primary NHS base at the York NHS Trust Teaching Hospital, and was appointed a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2013. In his private practice, he sees patients at The Lancaster Hospital, The Beardwood Hospital in Blackburn, and Sancta Maria Hospital in Swansea. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Khan is a dedicated educator who regularly teaches and trains junior doctors, GPs, and other healthcare professionals. He is certified in Physicians as Educators by the Royal College of Physicians (2011) and holds a Master’s degree in Medical Leadership from Birkbeck University of London, for which he received the Best Dissertation Award in 2017. He also earned a diploma in Medical Ethics and Law from Keele University in 2017 and serves as a PACES examiner with the Royal College of Physicians. Dr. Khan is an active contributor to medical research, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. Recently, he co-authored a well-regarded article in BMJ-Open on the factors contributing to stress and burnout among NHS consultants. His dedication to innovation and leadership in his field has been recognised with an Award for Innovation and Leadership from NHS Wales. Dr Khan has expertise in the following areas: • Management of type 1 & 2 diabetes, insulin pump therapy & CGM. • High blood pressure. • Cholesterol treatment. • Steroid-induced diabetes. • Diabetes & driving (Group 1 & Group 2 licenses). • Diabetic foot disease, including painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy & Charcot's. • Erectile dysfunction. • Supporting diabetes care of admitted patients. • Diabetes in young people. • Weight loss management. • Preparing for bariatric surgery. • Preparing patients for Ramadan fasting. • Various diabetes complications (eye, kidney, foot, gastroparesis & postural hypotension). • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). • Hyperthyroidism / Graves' Disease (overactive thyroid). • Male hypogonadism (testosterone deficiency). • Polycystic ovarian syndrome. • Addison's disease. • Adrenal gland problems. • Hirsutism. • Osteoporosis. • Pituitary problems (raised Prolactin, low pituitary hormones). • General Medical conditions: infections (e.g., cellulitis).
