About Dr Anur Guhan
Dr Anur Guhan is a clinician and a researcher. His experience is in Respiratory Medicine and General Medicine. He was accredited as a Medical Educator by the Royal College of Physicians and he is likewise with the University of Glasgow as an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer. When it comes to research experience, he has been in Airway Pharmacology, Asthma, and Pleural Diseases. His current research effort is for 4 multi-centre clinical trials, in Ayr, as the Principle Investigator. He became an NHS Consultant Respiratory Physician in 2004. He spent 8 years at the South Tees NHS Foundation Trust and proceeded to NHS Ayrshire and Arran, Scotland in 2012 to establish a district-wide Pleural Service in Ayrshire. He introduced a special robust domiciliary pleural service in Ayrshire and it involves managing patients with malignant pleural effusions at home with Indwelling Pleural Catheters while trained district nurses visit them frequently for the draining of the fluid into vacuum filled bottles. Hence, patients do not need to be hospitalised. They regard his pleural service as the demonstration of patient-centred care involving close-to-home service via seamless primary and secondary care partnership working. His professional colleagues at national and international meetings have listened to the data and patients' appreciative feedback from his service. Dr Anur Guhan also trains and educates postgraduate doctors. He is renowned nationally as one of the leaders in chest ultrasound and Pleural Diseases. He is a pioneer organiser of formal training for Respiratory Physicians in Chest Ultrasound skills towards ensuring patient safety during pleural procedures, in the UK. He was given the First Prize in the NHS Innovation Awards in 2012 for Training and Education and he was also a finalist in the UK National Training Awards sponsored by the UK Department of Business, Skills and Innovation. He plans a chest ultrasound course twice a year and it's known at the national level. The course is based at the University Hospital Ayr and delegates come from within the UK and abroad. Dr Guhan holds the position of a specialist advisor in Respiratory Medicine for the NATS Aeromedical Centre in Prestwick.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
