About
Dr Deric De Wit is an ophthalmologist and eye surgeon with subspecialty interests in glaucoma, cataract surgery, oculoplastics, and diseases of the anterior segment.
After completing his specialist training through the Eastern Deanery on the Cambridge rotation in the United Kingdom, Dr De Wit undertook fellowship training in cataract and refractive surgery, corneal graft surgery, and oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery across Cambridge and Belfast. He also served as an honorary research fellow at the Orbital and Lacrimal Clinic at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. He holds dual fellowships from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO) and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom (FRCOphth), along with a postgraduate diploma in cataract and refractive surgery from Ulster University. He is a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Adelaide and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr De Wit has a particular focus on complex glaucoma cases and is a pioneer in non-invasive glaucoma surgery. He is the first surgeon in Australia to have performed Canaloplasty, and the only surgeon in the country performing ab-externo Canaloplasty. He relocated to South Australia specifically to further his research into these techniques alongside leading figures in the field.
He has developed a strong clinical interest in macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease, with a focus on meeting the needs of patients across northern Adelaide and rural South Australia. Dr De Wit is an active researcher with extensive publications in international peer-reviewed journals through his involvement with the Cathedral Eye Research Foundation, and has presented at international meetings.
