A/Prof Samarawickrama graduated from the University of New South Wales and went on to complete a PhD, before training in ophthalmology at Sydney Eye Hospital in 2010. Following this, he undertook advanced speciality training in cornea and laser eye surgery at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. He was later chosen to embark on a fellowship at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, where he was able to work with prominent corneal surgeons and was subsequently appointed as a consultant in cornea and external eye diseases.
A/Prof Samarawickrama has made significant contributions to ophthalmic research and published more than 60 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and is a reviewer for a number of ophthalmology journals. A/Prof Samarawickrama has received over ten scholarships and over $1.7 million in research grants over the course of his career, and his research interests include the use of photonic sensors to detect keratoconus and the development of new therapeutics for herpes simplex keratitis. He is frequently asked to speak at international conferences, and he trains ophthalmologists in cataract surgery as well as complex corneal and anterior segment reconstructions.
