About Mr Ben Stutchfield
Mr Ben Stutchfield is a Consultant General Surgeon in Edinburgh with specialist expertise in liver transplantation, hernia surgery, and gallbladder disease. He treats patients with hernia problems, gallstones, and abdominal wall conditions, and also works as a specialist liver transplant surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He is part of Edinburgh’s specialist abdominal wall reconstruction team and has extensive experience managing both routine and complex surgical conditions. Mr Stutchfield’s areas of practice include liver transplantation, abdominal wall and groin (inguinal) hernia repair, including laparoscopic (keyhole) hernia surgery, the treatment of gallstones including laparoscopic (keyhole) cholecystectomy, and the assessment and treatment of common skin and soft tissue lumps and bumps. In private practice he performs laparoscopic and open hernia repair, laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, and minor procedures for skin and soft tissue lumps at Spire Murrayfield Hospital and Shawfair Park Hospital, tailoring treatment to each patient’s individual circumstances. He was appointed as an NHS Consultant in 2019 following specialist surgical training in Edinburgh, including advanced training in liver transplantation, biliary surgery, and abdominal wall reconstruction. During his training he also visited leading surgical centres across the UK, Europe and the United States. Mr Stutchfield completed a PhD in regenerative medicine at the University of Edinburgh and remains involved in research aimed at improving surgical outcomes. His work has been published in The Lancet and other peer-reviewed surgical journals. He aims to provide careful assessment and clear explanations, helping patients understand their condition and make well-informed decisions about treatment. Feedback from both NHS and private patients is welcomed as part of ongoing professional development and appraisal.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
