About
A/Prof Abbott achieved her MBBS from the University of Adelaide in 1989 before completing her specialist neurology training at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Following this, she undertook a PhD in stroke prevention as well as post-doctoral research at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute.
A/Prof Abbott continues to have a huge passion for improving patient outcomes and has spent significant time researching measures to reduce the risk of stroke and other complications by eliminating certain risk factors. Her work has led to her international recognition and she was awarded the Victorian Tall Poppy Science Award from the Australian Institue of Policy and Science in 2019. She also set up an international expert stroke prevention group, 'FACTCATS,' and is working on the world's first evidence-based guideline on the management of carotid arterial disease management.
“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
