About

Mr Anil Agarwal is a Consultant Surgeon with over 21 years of experience, specialising in lower gastrointestinal surgery, minimally invasive (keyhole) procedures, and endoscopy. His clinical practice includes both diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy), as well as a wide range of colorectal and general surgical conditions.

He has a strong subspecialist focus on laparoscopic surgery, including gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy), and both open and keyhole hernia repairs (inguinal, umbilical, and incisional). He also treats a broad spectrum of anorectal conditions such as haemorrhoids, anal fissures, fistulae, pilonidal disease, and rectal prolapse. His practice includes procedures such as stapled haemorrhoidopexy (PPH) and Doppler-guided haemorrhoidal artery ligation (HALO/THD).

Mr Agarwal has held senior leadership roles within the NHS, including Clinical Director of Surgery and Urology at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, and Associate Medical Director at the same trust. He has also contributed to undergraduate medical education as Lead for Teaching at the University of Sunderland and previously served as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Durham (Queen’s Campus, Stockton-on-Tees).

In addition to his clinical and academic roles, he has been an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and has acted as a Performance Assessor and Team Leader for the General Medical Council.

He has also contributed to surgical education at a national level as editor and contributor to key reference texts, including the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Surgery and the Oxford Handbook of Operative Surgery.

His clinical interests include laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, hernia repair, endoscopy, haemorrhoid treatments, and the management of a wide range of general and colorectal conditions such as abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, and changes in bowel habit.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
