Dr Au's training was based at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. Dr Au worked at the Monash Medical Centre Ophthalmology Unit as the cataract surgery senior registrar then fellow. Dr Au underwent further fellowship training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in the Orbital, Plastics and Lacrimal Unit and has spent time overseas pursuing further interest in Oculoplastic surgery.
Dr Au is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO). Dr Au has ongoing involvement in ophthalmic training. Dr Au has been involved in ophthalmic registrar training for many years, as a clinical tutor, lecturer and as the coordinator of the registrar's teaching programme. Dr Au has also been involved in organising the Fellowship examinations of the Royal Australasian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
