In 1996 gründete Dr. Schwaninger das Institut „Updent – The dental upgrade für lebenslangen Zahnerhalt". Bereits seit 1998 nutzt Dr. Schwaninger als einer der ersten Zahnärzte in Österreich die Vorteile der Mikroskopchirurgie im Bereich der Endodontie. Im Zuge von internationalen intensiven Fort- und Weiterbildungen u.a. an der UCLA School of Dentistry Implantologie entwickelte Dr. Karl Schwaninger Updent zu dem Insitut für lebenslangen Zahnerhalt in Wien. Heute ist „Updent – The dental upgrade für lebenslangen Zahnerhalt" die Institutsphilosophie, die von allen im Team tagtäglich gelebt wird.

Eine rechtzeitige und richtige Behandlung der Parodontitis ist überaus wichtig. Wird die Parodontitis nicht richtig behandelt, kann Gewebeentzündung, Mundgeruch sowie Zahnverlust – mit ästhetischen und funktionellen Beeinträchtigungen – die Folge sein. Parodontitis ist eine bakterielle Entzündung des Zahnhalteapparates. Ursache sind Bakterien, die das Zahnfleisch entzünden und das zahnhaltende Gewebe zerstören.
