About

Mr Raj Nijjar qualified from the University of Birmingham in 1994, so has 30 plus years of surgical experience. He specialises in minimally invasive surgery and 90% of his operations are performed with keyhole or laparoscopic techniques.

This means that his patients have less pain after surgery, less time off work and a quicker return to normal activity.

He focuses on surgery for Gallstones, hernia’s, acid reflux, weight loss and cancers of the oesophagus and stomach. He is also highly trained in Endoscopy and can offer treatments for blockages and removal of polyps.

He has published widely in his areas of specialism and spent time performing collaborative research with University College London.

He has trained with leading experts in the UK, Europe, Japan and Australia and he has performed many thousands of surgeries with excellent outcomes.

His NHS practice is based across Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands and Solihull Hospitals. He has led the Upper GI service for Birmingham covering a population of more than 3million for over 5 years. In that time he has developed a Gallstone treatment service that treats a 1000 plus patients a year and re-organised the upper GI Cancer services for the Birmingham area.

He teaches and trains future surgeons and examines trainees for the Royal College of Surgeons. He sits on the national council of the Association of Upper GI Surgeons representing the interests of Surgeons, trainees and patients of the whole of the West Midlands region.

He practices evidence based, patient centred care and offers a diligent, empathetic and caring approach to all his patients.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
