Professor Paul Ciclitira qualified from St Bartholomew's Hospital London in 1971 where he worked in his early careers. He also worked at The Royal Marsden Hospital, Surrey and Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge. In 1977, he completed postgraduate qualifications including an MD and PhD at The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology Cambridge.

Professor Ciclitira was accredited in general internal medicine and gastroenterology in 1982 and worked as a Senior Registrar at Guy's Hospital London.

Ciclitira was appointed a Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist and Senior Lecturer in Medicine at St Thomas' Hospital in October 1983 and was made Professor of Gastroenterology at Kings College, London in 1994.
