About Prof Long Jiao
Professor Long Jiao is Chair and Consultant in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at Hammersmith Hospital (Imperial College Healthcare), as well as the Lead for Robotic Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at the Royal Marsden Hospital. He consults privately at the Princess Grace and Wellington Hospitals. Professor Jiao has expertise in the following areas: • Colorectal Surgery • Hepatobiliary Surgery • Laparoscopy • Robotic Surgery • Gallbladder Cancer • Liver Cancer • Pancreatic Cancer He is also a lead surgeon and an academic professor at Imperial College and the Royal Marsden Hospital. Additionally, he runs the Northwest London training programme, and he is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh (FRCS). Professor Jiao is actively engaged in research into microRNAs, circulating tumour cells (CTCs), and liver regeneration. He was the first to discover CTCs residing in organs local to pancreatic or colon cancers, and he identified 3mRNAs to differentiate benign from premalignant pancreatic cystic tumours for early cancer detection. He also established the first robotic HPB programme in the United Kingdom. He uses a variety of cutting-edge surgical techniques and undertakes the largest number of laparoscopic and robotic liver and pancreatic resections. He treats patients using laparoscopic and robotic Whipples when appropriate, and he performed the first robotic Whipple procedure in the UK. Additionally, Professor Jiao was a pioneer of radiofrequency-assisted liver partitioning with portal vein ligation for staged liver resection in liver surgery. He was able to increase the number of patients undergoing liver surgery who were previously thought unresectable by inducing liver hypertrophy preoperatively to avoid liver failure. Professor Jiao has published papers on the application of radiofrequency in the treatment of liver tumours.
