About Prof James A Gossage

Professor James A. Gossage is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in complex oesophagogastric surgery. His private practice is based at London Bridge Hospital as part of the London Digestion group, with additional consultations available at St Thomas’ Hospital, central London, and the Sevenoaks Medical Centre in Kent. Professor Gossage completed his specialist surgical training at leading London teaching hospitals and across the South East. He was awarded a laparoscopic surgical fellowship and an HCA Foundation grant to undertake advanced training with the Professorial Surgical Unit in Adelaide, Australia. He also received a Royal College of Surgeons grant to study trauma surgery in South Africa, broadening his international surgical experience. At St Thomas’ Hospital, Professor Gossage performs a high volume of major procedures for oesophageal and gastric cancer. He also treats benign oesophageal conditions and provides surgical management for common gastrointestinal problems, including gallstones and hernias. He has played a key role in developing the trust’s robotic oesophagogastric surgery programme, undertaking specialist training in Utrecht and Japan.  Professor Gossage has held several senior leadership roles, including Lead of the Upper Gastrointestinal Service at St Thomas’ Hospital, Chair of the Regional Cancer Network, and National Lead for Oesophagogastric Cancer Surgery on the AUGIS Council. He is currently the surgical representative on the National Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Audit (NOGCA) committee, part of the Royal College of Surgeons Clinical Effectiveness Unit. He has a strong academic background and was awarded the prestigious Hunterian Professorship for his research towards his higher degree. He is an Associate Professor at King’s College London and an affiliated researcher with the Upper Gastrointestinal Research Unit at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. He has published extensively, with over 120 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and a textbook in his specialist field.
