His clinical interests are as follows:
• Laparoscopic surgery: hernia, acid reflux, gall stones and appendix
• Benign and malignant diseases of the oesophagus, stomach and colon
• Complex gastrointestinal surgery and patients with major complications
• Skin cancer and skin lumps
Prof. Patel is a clinical academic surgeon focusing on patient outcome and promoting safe surgical practice globally.
He provides consulting and surgical expertise for patients suffering from both common such as indigestion, abdominal discomfort, hernia, heartburn, gallstones, oesophago-gastric cancer and severe surgical problems including high risk patients and those who require managing post-operative complications from previous surgeries.
Prof. Patel works for the Barts Health NHS Trust and conducts Gastro-Oesophageal Surgery. He is a world pioneer in the establishment of higher education degrees for the acquisition of surgical skills through simulation. He founded the 'Virtual Reality Surgical Simulation Centre' for educating surgeons and pioneered the MSc in Surgical Skills and Sciences at Queen Mary, University of London.
