About

ABOUT Mr A SAXENA: After obtaining (MCh in Neurosurgery),completing his Neurosurgical training in Neurosurgery at GB Pant Hospital affiliated to University of Delhi, India & working as a Consultant Neurosurgeon in India for few years, Mr Saxena moved to UK in 1995.

He obtained his UK neurosurgical training at ‘United Leeds Teaching Hospitals’ in Leeds. He obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England [FRCS (Eng)] in 1997, Specialis Accreditation in 1999, Intercollegiate Fellowship in Surgical Neurology (FRCS Surgical Neurology) in April 2000 and 'Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training'' in May 2001.

He was appointed as a  Substantive Consultant Neurosurgeon on the 16 August 2001 at University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire in Coventry, UK. He has over 23 years of clinical experience as a Consultant Neurosurgeon in the United Kingdom.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE: Mr Saxena would consult approximately 1900 patients (new & FU) in the NHS and approximately 850 patients (new, FU, NHS & Private) in the Private Hospitals (majority spine) every year. In the last 22 years, (conservative estimate), he would have carried out approximately 4500 spinal operations (cervical & Lumbar) in NHS and Private Hospitals including very complex cervical spine procedures. ‘BBC West Midland News’ telecast my first ‘Total cervical disc replacement’ surgery on the 12 June 2007.

ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE:   

1. DEPARTMENTAL: As Clinical Lead (2016-2019), Mr Saxena led recruitment, Clinical Governance, Quality Improvement & Business planning. He also developed Trust Guidelines for 1) Prevention of wrong level spine surgery 2) GP referral of patients with back & neck pain 3) Protocols for management of patients with aSAH and 4) ‘Web based referral system’.

2. REGIONAL: 

A) Mr Amar Saxena is currently the Regional Specialty Professional Advisor in Neurosurgery for the West Midlands since November 2014, appointed by the RCS England.

B) He worked as Chairman  Specialty Training Committee (STC) in Neurosurgery and Training Programme Director (TPD) for West Midlands (2005-2012). As Chairman, he had to liaise with the Dean, TPDs (four Neurosurgical units) & respective CMOs, SAC and Royal Colleges. I a) Validated trainees b) Allocated placements c) Chaired ARCP panels d) Arranged training for Trainers.

3. NATIONAL: On national level, Mr A Saxena has worked as A) Member of the SAC (Specialty Advisory Committee) in Neurosurgery (Advising about Neurosurgical training to four Royal Colleges). This committee monitors standards of ‘National Neurosurgery Selection’ & ‘Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery Exit Exam’, Work force planning and 'certification of Completion of Neurosurgical Training'. a) As SAC liaison member, he monitored standard of training in three Neurosurgical units and certification of their trainees.

B) Member of the National Neurosurgery Selection Board since its inception, Mr Saxena was involved in initial development of various stations for Interview for National recruitment I was involved in ‘National recruitment of Neurosurgical trainees’ for UK.

INTERNATIONAL: Mr Saxena has been actively involved Internationally and has contributed significantly to Neurosurgical Training

A) As elected UK representative to the European Association of Neurological Societies (EANS) Training Committee (2012-16), he was involved in selecting British trainees for EANS coursesand teaching on the EANS training courses. B) He has also contributed to International training as a member of Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons (ACNS) Training committee.

TRAINING EXPERIENCE:

REGIONAL: As Chairman of STC, Mr Saxena developed a) Mandatory ‘Regional Study Day’ b) Regional ‘Curriculum based teaching programme’ c) ‘Mock Exit examination in Neurosurgery’.

NATIONAL: A) In his capacity as National Simulation Lead for Neurosurgery, Mr Saxena conceptualised, developed & organised the first (2016) & subsequent National ST3 Boot camps (now Simulation courses) in Neurosurgery. This ‘high fidelity simulation course’ (recognised by RCS England & part of ST3 National Curriculum), teaches ST3 trainees relevant operative approaches using simulation in consent & positioning, surgical approach on cadavers using operating microscope, high speed drills & navigation system.  Trainees get a ‘real life experience’ preparing them for senior (ST4) role.

INTERNATIONAL: A) Mr Saxena has organised International Simulation courses for all level of trainees (FY2 to ST8).  B) Taught on EANS courses in Europe covering spine & neurovascular. C)Taught on ACNS courses in Russia, Nepal, Indonesia & India.
