About

Mr Martin Richardson is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with over two decades of experience in the treatment and management of general orthopaedic issues, such as shoulder problems, knee problems, trauma and sports injuries.

Mr Richardson gained his primary medical qualification in 1986 at the University of Melbourne, after which he achieved his Master of Surgery Degree. He then followed this with his specialist orthopaedic training and later gained a prestigious knee fellowship with Mr John Bartlett, a renowned knee surgeon. He also gained fellowship with renowned Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon, Professor Simon Bell, after which he completed a research fellowship at the Shriner's Hospital, Oregon, USA. Upon completion of his training and fellowships, Dr Richardson was appointed Consultant in 1998. Since then, Mr Richardson has also been appointed Australian Director of Education for the Royal Australasian College of Surgery, and also the Director of Trauma at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Mr Richardson is also a Senior instructor for the Royal Australasian College of Surgery. He has written several book chapters and taken part in multiple research projects in the areas of orthopaedics.

He is also a founding member of Orthopaedics Victoria and consults at Epworth Eastern Hospital and Epworth Richmond Hospital.

He is internationally renowned for his orthopaedic surgery skills, particularly in the following areas:

• Arthroscopic shoulder surgery

• Total shoulder replacements (including reverse shoulder replacements)

• Sports knee injuries

• Hip and knee joint replacements

He is also an active member of the scientific research community and is currently an Associate Professor within the University of Melbourne Anatomy and Cell Biology department. He is a member of the Shoulder and Elbow Society and the Australasian Orthopaedic Trauma Society.
