Mr Venki Sundaram is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Luton and Dunstable NHS University Hospital. He qualified from Oxford University Medical School and trained in Ophthalmology in the London Deanery and Moorfields Eye Hospital, the oldest and largest centre for ophthalmic treatment in Europe.
Mr Sundaram completed Retinal Fellowship at Moorfields and gained wide experience of retinal conditions and complex cataract surgery. In 2014, Mr Sundaram obtained his MD research degree from UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields working as the Principal Ophthalmologist to the world's first gene therapy trial for inherited retinal disease, and Europe's first retinal Stem Cell Therapy trial.
Mr Sundaram specialises in medical retinal conditions (macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy, retinal vein occlusion, myopic degeneration and central serous retinopathy); cataract surgery (particularly in patients with additional retinal problems); and glaucoma. He is an expert in intravitreal injections for retinal conditions, retinal laser therapy, cataract surgery using monofocal, toric and multifocal lenses, and glaucoma laser.
Mr Sundaram is actively involved in clinical research and has a keen interest in the development of retinal therapies. He has co-authored a number of publications in some of the most prestigious medical journals. He is also the lead author of the "Training in Ophthalmology" textbook published by Oxford University Press and widely used by junior Ophthalmologists in the UK and abroad. Mr Sundaram also sits on advisory panels for major ophthalmic therapeutic companies.
