About Dr Michael Koa-Wing
Dr Michael Koa-Wing, Lead Consultant Cardiologist, currently works at West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust and Imperial College Healthcare in London. He is very experienced in treating and managing all aspects of general cardiology, including chest pain, heart failure, loss of consciousness, palpitations, heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias), and implantable cardiac devices. He has a keen interest in the implantation of a wide range of medical devices including pacemakers, loop recorders, left atrial appendage occluders, defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronisation devices. He can also offer patients several procedures including cardioversions and catheter ablation (supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation, and ventricular tachycardia). Dr Koa-Wing qualified from his foundation training from Guys', King's and St. Thomas' Medical Schools with distinctions, before undertaking his postgraduate training at St. Mary's and Hammersmith Hospitals in London. During his training years, he studied abroad at Brigham & Women's Hospital associated with Harvard Medical School to further develop his skills. He also undertook a research degree focusing on cardiac electrophysiology, which later resulted in a PhD being awarded to him by Imperial College London. His research results on ventricular tachycardia ablation in addition to the development of a 3D mapping system for ablation of complex arrhythmias went on to be trialled in a multicentre clinical trial and is now in clinical use worldwide. Dr Koa-Wing was later made a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and holds several professional memberships including the British Cardiac Society, the European Society of Cardiology and the British Heart Rhythm Society. He is also an active teacher, holding the position of Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College, London.
