Dr. Dilshan Udayasiri is a consultant Colorectal Surgeon and General/Trauma Surgeon at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he is committed to delivering personalised, holistic care through evidence-based practice. Recognising how life-changing a cancer diagnosis can be for patients and their families, Dr. Udayasiri is passionate about developing long-term relationships and ensuring that treatment plans align with each patient’s wishes and health goals. He firmly believes that the best outcomes are achieved when doctors and patients work collaboratively.
Dr. Udayasiri completed his General Surgical training at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne before pursuing doctoral studies in colorectal cancer research at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the University of Melbourne. He was subsequently accepted into the highly selective post-fellowship training program run by the Australia and New Zealand Training Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. During his two-year fellowship, he worked alongside some of Australia’s top colorectal surgeons, honing his skills in minimally invasive (keyhole) and complex colorectal surgery.
A dedicated academic, Dr. Udayasiri serves as a senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne and is an avid researcher in the rapidly evolving field of colorectal surgery. He works with world-renowned specialists and his public appointment at the Royal Melbourne Hospital ensures access to quaternary level subspecialties when needed. Currently, he is completing a Master’s in Biostatistics at Monash University with the goal of developing a training program to equip the next generation of surgeons with essential research skills. Dr. Udayasiri has also been mentored by Associate Professor Ian Hayes, and he is set to care for Professor Hayes’ patients following his retirement in 2023.
