About
Dr. Mani Niazi is a Medical Director and Consultant General, Upper GI, and Bariatric Surgeon with more than 18 years of surgical experience. He qualified as a consultant in 2006, when he was awarded his Board of General Surgery Certificate, and since then has developed extensive expertise across a wide spectrum of surgical procedures. His practice includes metabolic and bariatric surgery such as sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and revision procedures, as well as advanced laparoscopic surgery. He also performs gastrointestinal operations involving the oesophagus, stomach, intestines, colon, spleen, appendix, and biliary tract, in addition to surgery for reflux disease and hiatus hernia repair. His experience further covers gallbladder surgery, hernia repair, thyroid and parathyroid surgery with a focus on minimally invasive parathyroidectomy, as well as skin and soft tissue surgery for lipomas, lesions, skin cancers, and pilonidal disease. He also carries out abdominoplasty procedures.
Dr. Niazi trained at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, one of the leading academic centres in the region. After completing his training, he began working in 2006 as a Consultant General and Upper GI/Bariatric Surgeon and Lecturer at Golestan University of Medical Sciences in Gorgan, while performing major bariatric operations at Laleh Hospital in Tehran. His international career progressed when, in 2013, he was recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons as a surgical fellow without requiring further training in general surgery, an exception rarely granted to international medical graduates. He went on to complete two further fellowship programs in Australia, the first in Breast, Endocrine, and Surgical Oncology at Tweed Heads Hospital and John Flynn Hospital on the Gold Coast, and the second in Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery at St George Hospital in Sydney, a Centre of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery.
Alongside his clinical practice, Dr. Niazi has made significant contributions to surgical research and innovation. He played a key role in the development and introduction of laparoscopic gastric plication, becoming one of the pioneers of this technique. He presented his work at the first International Summit of Gastric Plication in Barcelona in 2011 and introduced the procedure in Australia at the Royal Brisbane Hospital in 2010, where he supervised the country’s first case. For this, he was awarded a Travelling Fellowship by the Bariatric Department of the hospital. His research was subsequently cited in the 10th edition of Schwartz’s Principles of Surgery, one of the most widely used surgical textbooks in the world.
Teaching and mentoring are central to Dr. Niazi’s professional activities. He has lectured at institutions including Monash University, Bond University, Griffith University, the University of New South Wales, Gorgan University of Medical Sciences, and Tehran University of Medical Sciences. He also supervises and mentors medical students and surgical trainees through Monash University and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
