Mr Damian Balmforth

Mr. Balmforth is a highly skilled consultant cardiac surgeon with a particular focus on complex aortic surgery. He currently leads the aortic surgery program at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

He earned his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from Imperial College London, where he received the prestigious Faculty of Medicine Prize in his final examinations. His surgical training took place at renowned London institutions, including Guy’s Hospital, St George’s Hospital, The Royal Brompton Hospital, and St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Following his training, Mr. Balmforth completed the complex aortic fellowship at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. He is proficient in a wide range of adult cardiac surgical procedures, with a special emphasis on thoracic aorta surgery, aortic valve surgery, and coronary bypass surgery.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr. Balmforth has a robust academic background. In 2020, he earned a PhD in cardiovascular medicine from Queen Mary University of London. His research on cellular senescence and acute kidney injury in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass earned him the Ronald Edwards Medal from the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland. Mr. Balmforth is a frequent presenter at international conferences and is a member of both the Royal College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians.
