About Mr Roland Fernandes
Mr. Roland Fernandes is a Consultant Surgeon at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in general and benign upper gastrointestinal (GI) surgery. He is particularly recognised for his expertise in laparoscopic and minimally invasive abdominal procedures, including gallbladder removal, hernia repair, and advanced endoscopic interventions. Mr. Fernandes graduated from St George’s University of London in 2008 and completed his Core Surgical Training in the Kent, Surrey, and Sussex region. He went on to pursue Higher Surgical Training in the Wessex Deanery before joining East Kent Hospitals in 2018 as a substantive Upper GI Consultant Surgeon. In addition to his clinical work, Mr. Fernandes is an educator and leader in surgical training. He currently serves as the Training Programme Director for Higher Surgical Trainees in Kent and was previously the Foundation Doctor Lead for the Trust. He also leads surgical training in endoscopy and has introduced innovative techniques such as the Flamingo device for buried bumper removal and the Endoscopic Ovesco clip for fistula closure. Mr. Fernandes is a published author, having written a book to support junior doctors preparing for their exit exams. His academic contributions include more than 30 peer-reviewed research papers indexed on PubMed. He is a member of the General Medical Council and the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and his commitment to training, research, and surgical innovation continues to enhance patient care and clinical excellence across his department.
