Mr Fida Rahman Casans is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon who practises at Woodlands Hospital in Darlington and works within County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. He manages a wide range of colorectal and general surgical conditions and provides both laparoscopic and open procedures.
Mr Casans graduated with distinction in 1998 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. He completed his pre-registration house officer posts at Bishop Auckland General Hospital and South Tees Hospitals in Middlesbrough before undertaking basic surgical training at South Tees. In 2003, he was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He then joined the research team at Durham University, where he studied the role of stem cells in colorectal cancer and completed a PhD in Biological Sciences, presenting and publishing his work in peer-reviewed journals.
Alongside his scientific work, he developed an interest in medical education. He held a Clinical Lecturer role associated with the University of Newcastle and completed a postgraduate certificate in Clinical Education in 2005. His commitment to training extends to mentoring junior doctors, medical students, nurses and theatre staff. He has also contributed to charitable healthcare work in Sudan and Pakistan.
After completing his research, Mr Casans resumed surgical training in the North East of England, completing a higher surgical programme and achieving Fellowship of the Intercollegiate Specialty Board in General Surgery in 2012. In 2014, he joined Darlington Memorial Hospital as a Consultant Surgeon, providing acute and elective care with a focus on laparoscopic colorectal and general surgery. He is involved in service development and in supporting the recruitment and training of other colorectal consultants.
Mr Casans performs advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including oesophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy, and is JAG-certified in both upper and lower GI endoscopy. He is a core member of the multidisciplinary team assessing complex colonic and rectal polyps and has introduced techniques such as transanal minimally invasive surgery and transanal endoscopic operations for locally advanced polyps. He helped establish a colonic stenting service at Darlington Memorial Hospital and has undertaken specialist training in transanal total mesorectal excision at a high-volume centre in Barcelona. He is also involved in the introduction of robotic surgery within his Trust.
In addition to colorectal cancer and benign colorectal disease, his clinical practice includes the management of inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, rectal prolapse, stoma reversal procedures and perianal pathology. He also treats a full range of hernias using laparoscopic and open techniques and undertakes abdominal wall reconstruction. Mr Casans remains engaged in national and international academic activity, contributes to scientific meetings and examines postgraduate research work.
