A/Prof Simon Tan is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in shoulder and knee surgery and the founder of St Vincent’s SportsMed. He completed his medical degree at the University of New South Wales with honours before undertaking orthopaedic training and receiving his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 2003. He further advanced his expertise with specialist training at the Miller Clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina, completing a sports orthopaedic fellowship focused on shoulder and knee surgery and the management of acute athletic injuries.
A/Prof Tan has extensive experience across a wide range of procedures, including arthroscopic shoulder surgery, labral and rotator cuff repair, shoulder replacement, Latarjet procedures, SLAP and shoulder stabilisation surgery, knee arthroscopy, chondral grafting, meniscal repair, and knee ligament reconstruction, including complex multi-ligament reconstructions. He also manages fractures using both surgical and non-surgical approaches.
In 2004, he founded St Vincent’s SportsMed at St Vincent’s Clinic in Sydney with the vision of creating a centre that combines clinical excellence with strong patient-focused care in a supportive environment. He has a longstanding commitment to research and teaching and has frequently hosted international shoulder courses, lecturing and demonstrating advanced arthroscopic techniques to surgeons across the Asia-Pacific region. In recognition of his ongoing academic contributions, including research into stem cell and regenerative therapies and shoulder surgery, he was awarded an Associate Professorship in 2014.
