Mr Seán Ó Murchú is a physiotherapist and researcher with a strong academic foundation and a growing portfolio of work in neurorehabilitation, respiratory physiology, and assistive technologies. He holds a BSc in Medical and Health Sciences from University College Cork and an MSc in Physiotherapy from King’s College London. During his undergraduate studies, he conducted pre-clinical neurophysiology research examining how acute intermittent hypoxia influences breathing and respiratory muscle function in a mouse model of muscular dystrophy.
Alongside his Master’s studies, Seán worked as a research assistant in the Department of Physiotherapy at the University of Limerick. There, he contributed to the development of an adaptive mobile health intervention designed to increase physical activity in people recovering from stroke. Clinically, he has gained valuable experience in neurorehabilitation through his work at Axon Rehab in Ireland, where he combined traditional physiotherapy methods with innovative assistive technologies to support patients with complex neurological conditions.
Seán is currently part of the Spinal Cord Injury Research Centre at NeuRA, where he is involved in several clinical trials investigating transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation. These studies explore its potential to improve walking ability (eWalk 2.0), upper limb function, and respiratory capacity in individuals living with chronic spinal cord injuries. Through his research and clinical practice, Seán remains committed to advancing evidence-based rehabilitation and improving functional outcomes for people with neurological impairments.
