Prof. Dr. Safwan Taha is a surgeon with established expertise in metabolic and bariatric surgery and is currently practicing at Mediclinic Hospital, Airport Road. He graduated from Basrah College of Medicine, Iraq, in 1983 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree and was appointed Professor of Surgery with distinction in 2000.
In 2003, Prof. Taha served as the founding Dean of Thi-Qar College of Medicine in Iraq, contributing to the development of medical education and academic governance. His postgraduate qualifications include a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and a Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons. He also holds a Specialization Diploma in Laparoscopic Surgery from Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg, France.
Prof. Taha is a founding member of the Emirates Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. His clinical practice includes a broad range of bariatric, metabolic, and gastrointestinal procedures, such as gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass, gastric balloon procedures, laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, and hiatus hernia repair.
He has authored over 37 published scientific papers and serves as a reviewer for the journal Obesity Surgery, reflecting his continued involvement in academic research and surgical advancement.
