About Miss Ramya Kalaiselvan
Miss Ramya Kalaiselvan is a Consultant Robotic General and Colorectal Surgeon specialising in minimally invasive (robotic and laparoscopic) general and colorectal surgery. She was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust in June 2018 and has since taken on a senior leadership role, serving as Deputy Divisional Medical Director for Surgical Specialities from May 2025. She trained at leading surgical units in Liverpool and Manchester, gaining extensive experience in complex colorectal and general surgical care. She completed her specialist training at the National Intestinal Failure Unit in Salford, where she developed advanced expertise in managing complex gastrointestinal and intestinal failure conditions. Her training was further enhanced by a visiting fellowship at the Comprehensive Hernia Centre at the Cleveland Clinic in the United States, where she gained additional experience in advanced hernia and abdominal wall reconstruction techniques. Her clinical practice focuses on minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic and laparoscopic approaches, which are used to improve patient outcomes through reduced postoperative pain, shorter recovery times, and enhanced surgical precision. She provides specialist care in colorectal conditions such as bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and benign colorectal disease, as well as complex hernia repair and abdominal wall reconstruction. Alongside her clinical work, she holds several national leadership and representative roles. She is Chair of Coloproctology for the Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance, the Mersey Chapter Representative for the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, and Treasurer of the Coloproctology Section at the Royal Society of Medicine.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
