Über uns
Mr. Rajen Gupta, is a distinguished ophthalmologist specialising in cataract surgery with expertise in general eye and medical retinal conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and vascular disorders.
He graduated with honours from Nottingham University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Medical Sciences and a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS).
After completing undergraduate training, Mr. Gupta worked in various medical disciplines, including general medicine, neurosurgery, and elderly care medicine, broadening his knowledge and honing his skills. He completed the Royal college of Physicians' exam before his passion for ophthalmology led him to pursue post-graduate training in Nottingham and Birmingham, followed by a prestigious Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.
Mr Gupta provides bespoke care for medical retina and general ophthalmic conditions. In addition to the following proceedures:
In 2008, Mr. Gupta joined the Newcastle Eye Centre at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where he specialises in treating conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, vascular disorders, and age-related macular degeneration. His commitment to advancing medical education is evident through his keen interest in andragogy—the science of adult learning—and its application in teaching ophthalmology.
A recognised authority in his field, Mr. Gupta has lectured nationally on the intricacies of teaching cataract surgery and has authored a textbook on the subject, contributing significantly to the education and training of future ophthalmologists. Previously serving as a regional lead for the Diabetic Eye Screening Program, Mr. Gupta currently holds the position of Head of School, overseeing ophthalmic training in the Northern deanery. He also acts as a regional clinical tutor helping train other consultants and doctors in training.
Recently published data (April 2024) from the National Ophthalmic database shows Mr Gupta has an adjusted posterior capsule rupture rate of 0.40% for cataract surgery performed on the NHS compared with the higher national average of 1.1%. This reflects the high skill regardless of the complexity and associated patient ocular co factors.
I serve as part of RCOphth faculty for phaco courses, have taken part in helping develop new RCOphth 2024 ophthalmic curriculum.
I am a member of the BMA and the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of cataract and refractive surgeons (UKISCRS).
