About

Professor Prithwish Banerjee is a cardiologist working in Coventry & Warwickshire, UK. He was trained in the Yorkshire (Leeds) Deanery and obtained his accreditation (CCST) in Cardiology and General Internal Medicine in 2004 and in the same year was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire (UHCW) to lead the heart failure service.

He has expertise in all varieties of heart failure (including advanced and complex patients) , general and preventative cardiology, echocardiography (transthoracic, transoesophageal, stress echo, bubble contrast echo), cardiac catheterisation and cardiac biopsies, cardiorenal disease, pulmonary hypertension, cardiac rehabilitation, and academic cardiology.

Professor Banerjee held the position of the lead for heart failure for the Coventry & Warwickshire Cardiovascular Network from 2005 to 2013. He became Research Lead in cardiology in his hospital in 2011, Cardiovascular Research Lead for the West Midlands NIHR Clinical Research Network in 2012, and Chair for the Midlands Heart Failure Group in the same year. He was appointed Honorary Professor of Cardiology by Coventry University in April 2016 and by the University of Warwick (Warwick Medical School) in August 2019. He currently holds all these positions. He held the position of clinical lead for cardiology at UHCW NHS Trust from December 2019 until June 2021.

In the clinical field he has devoted himself to achieve excellence in heart failure care by bringing in passion, energy, innovation, insight and expertise. This is exemplified in the work of the team of ten heart failure specialist nurses and two consultants that he is privileged to lead, and in the services provided by this team including day care intravenous diuretics and iron, a robust and large community heart failure service, ultrafiltration for refractory fluid overload, device therapy, cardiac rehabilitation and unique clinics for difficult patients such as those with cardiorenal syndrome, cardiac amyloidosis and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFPEF). He also runs and participates in community and hospital MDT meetings for heart failure and AL Amyloidosis.

He has a strong interest in teaching and training and is a faculty teacher and examiner for Warwick Medical School. He teaches and delivers lectures also to junior doctors, advanced trainees, at medical society meetings, as well as at national and international conferences. He has been invited to deliver lectures in Europe, Asia and Africa. He is an examiner for MRCP PACES and for academic degrees such as MRes, MD and PhD with various UK universities. He is also a supervisor for higher research degrees (MD and PhD) with both Warwick and Coventry Universities and is currently supervising 6 such students including one from Ain Shams University in Egypt.

Professor Banerjee is an editor and reviewer for a number of national and international peer-reviewed journals and is a reviewer of research grant applications with prestigious grant bodies such as the BHF/NIHR.

Professor Banerjee's academic work is focused on areas where there is poor understanding and limited or no treatment options. Having previously secured research grants of round £400,000 from grant bodies, he is striving to look deeper into the understanding of HFPEF patients, cardiac fatigue, cardiorenal disease, cardiotoxicity with radiotherapy, cardiac arrest survivors and palliative care for heart failure patients. He is and has been principal investigator on several multicentre trials and has worked on novel projects involving cardiac rehabilitation.
