About

Professor Bainbridge studied medicine at King's College Cambridge and St. Mary's Hospital London, and trained in clinical ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital London. His postgraduate academic training, PhD and postdoctoral research at UCL were supported by Wellcome Trust Fellowships and a NIHR Research Professorship. In 2005, he was appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital London, and in 2011 to the Chair of Retinal Studies at UCL. In 2018 he was appointed Surgeon Oculist to Her Majesty's Household.

Professor Bainbridge specialises in surgery for conditions of the retina including retinal detachment, macular hole and epiretinal membrane. He also manages cataracts, diabetic eye disease and macular degeneration.

As a surgeon-scientist his aim is to protect and restore vision by developing effective new treatments for retinal diseases. His programme of translational research extends from the laboratory investigation of mechanisms of retinal disease to clinical trials of new medical and surgical interventions. He has pioneered gene therapy and stem cell therapy for people affected by blinding diseases of the retina. He has published some 240 papers and book chapters on the management of retinal disease. Awards for his achievements include the Royal College of Ophthalmologists' Foulds Trophy, the Academy of Medical Sciences Award for Ophthalmology, Moorfields Research Medal, The Ruskell Medal, the US Foundation Fighting Blindness Board of Directors' Award and the 2018 Champalimaud Vision Award.
