Professor Lotery is a consultant ophthalmologist who trained in medicine at Queen's University Belfast and graduated with distinction in 1989. After general ophthalmology training in Belfast, he was awarded an MD for research into the genetics of an inherited form of macular degeneration. Subsequently, he completed a two-year medical retina sub-specialist fellowship at the University of Iowa, USA. During his four years in the United States, he gained experience in the management of macular degeneration, inherited retinal diseases and diabetic retinopathy.
He can perform sutureless cataract surgery using topical anaesthesia and treat retinal diseases with cold (PDT) and hot lasers and pioneering new treatments. His research has resulted in the identification of two genes which cause eye disease and the location of a third macular degeneration gene. He has also worked on a gene therapy for eye diseases.
