Dr Smart's special interests include the following:

Dr Smart trained in general surgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital before undertaking a fellowship in colorectal surgery in 2009. He has also completed a colorectal fellowship at the renowned Cleveland Clinic, USA, where he gained expertise in the methods of robotic surgery. Following this, Dr Smart became a Doctor of Medical Science after studying at the University of Melbourne. He also achieved a degree in clinical research methods at Monash University.
Dr Smart also founded MBS Search which is one of Australia's most renowned medical apps for doctors and surgeons, enabling them to search for relevant MBS (Medicare Benefits Schedule) codes for their surgeries.
