About Mr Nicholas Dawe
Mr Nicholas Dawe is a Consultant ENT Surgeon at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust, a position he has held since 2019. He specialises in otology (ear surgery), neurotology (hearing and balance disorders) and lateral skull base surgery, managing complex conditions affecting structures deep within and around the ear. He performs approximately 150 major ear and skull base procedures each year, including surgery for cholesteatoma, hearing reconstruction and eardrum repair, and is experienced in both minimally invasive and endoscopic surgical techniques. In addition to his subspecialist work, Mr Dawe manages a wide range of general ENT conditions in both adults and children. His practice includes procedures such as tonsillectomy, grommet insertion, septoplasty for deviated nasal septum, sinus surgery and treatment for nosebleeds. As part of his role, he is a core member of several multidisciplinary teams involved in the management of complex ear disease, skull base tumours such as vestibular schwannoma and paraganglioma, balance disorders, and hearing implant services including bone conduction and middle ear implants. Mr Dawe completed his undergraduate and postgraduate medical training in Newcastle upon Tyne, London and New Zealand, gaining broad experience across major teaching hospitals in the North East. He undertook advanced fellowship training in otology and lateral skull base surgery at University Hospital Birmingham, alongside a TWJ short visiting fellowship, further developing his expertise in complex ear surgery and hearing implants. He has a particular interest in hearing and balance disorders, with ongoing research involvement in areas such as hearing loss and Ménière’s disease. He is the lead author of several peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in his field. Alongside his clinical work, Mr Dawe is actively involved in education and training. He leads surgical training courses in advanced otology for both local trainees and international delegates, teaches medical students and mentors junior doctors and ENT trainees.
