About

Mr Russell is a fully accredited NHS Consultant General Surgeon on the General Medical Council specialist register for General Surgery. He undertook undergraduate medical studies at St Andrews University before completing clinical studies at Cambridge University. His specialist surgical training took place in Cambridge and the eastern deanery. In his final year of training, he was appointed as the General Surgical Chief Resident at Addenbrooke's. He was appointed as a Consultant General and Transplant Surgeon at Addenbrooke's Hospital in 2014. He is currently the Head of Transplant at Addenbrooke's Hospital. He has experience in all aspects of general surgery. His main interests in general surgery lie with the treatment of abdominal wall and groin hernias. He performs laparoscopic (keyhole) and open surgery and performs hernia repairs under general, local and spinal anaesthetic.

Mr Russell's transplant work includes kidney, pancreas and intestinal/multivisceral transplants and he is the surgical lead for living donor kidney transplantation at Addenbrooke's. Through experience with intestinal transplantation, he performs repairs/reconstruction of complex abdominal wall hernias. He is heavily involved in the teaching of medical students and junior doctors, including trainee general surgeons. He examines for the Cambridge University exam board and is an Associate Lecturer at Cambridge University Medical School.

Outside of work, Neil enjoys spending time with family and playing golf with his border collie in tow.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
