About Dr Muhammad Nadeem Iftikhar
Dr Muhammad Nadeem Iftikhar is a Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist with more than 20 years of NHS experience and a specialist focus on liver disease. He is currently Consultant Gastroenterologist and Clinical Lead for Hepatology at the Northern Care Alliance Group in Manchester, with his clinical work based primarily at The Royal Oldham Hospital, Rochdale Infirmary and Fairfield General Hospital. His practice covers the full range of gastroenterology and hepatology services, including outpatient clinics, inpatient ward rounds, endoscopy, liver clinics and FibroScan assessments. He is an experienced upper and lower GI endoscopist and holds JAG accreditation in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. In addition, he has undertaken specialist training in bowel cancer screening and achieved full JAG Bowel Cancer Screener accreditation. Dr Iftikhar completed his specialist gastroenterology training in Health Education England – North West and later undertook a fellowship in liver transplantation at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. His postgraduate training also included work at internationally recognised centres of excellence, such as South Manchester University Hospital, Newcastle University Hospitals and Leicester Royal Infirmary, where he gained advanced expertise in hepatology, liver transplantation and clinical nutrition. Alongside his clinical work, Dr Iftikhar is actively involved in medical education. He is an accredited educator with the Royal College of Physicians, London, and regularly teaches final-year medical students from the University of Manchester. He is also part of the Global Training Centre at Edge Hill University, where he provides training to international gastroenterology trainees. He has a strong interest in medical leadership and hospital management, and in 2024 was appointed Clinical Director of Gastroenterology for Bury, Rochdale and Oldham within the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust. In this role he leads on the strategic development of gastroenterology, hepatology and endoscopy services across the division. His clinical expertise spans a wide range of areas, including upper and lower GI endoscopy, therapeutic procedures such as polypectomy, variceal banding and Botox injections, as well as the management of complex liver conditions such as cirrhosis, NAFLD, portal hypertension, hepatic encephalopathy and pre- and post-liver transplant care. He also manages the full spectrum of general gastroenterology disorders including coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease, bile salt malabsorption and nutritional disorders. Dr Iftikhar is a member of the Royal College of Physicians, the British Society of Gastroenterology, the British Association for the Study of the Liver and the Society of Acute Medicine.
