Zac has been practicing in the West of Scotland since 2006, with roles at NHS Ayrshire & Arran and NHS Golden Jubilee National Hospital, where he also leads postgraduate ophthalmic and surgical training. He was the first to introduce sutureless vitrectomy in clinical practice, established Scotland’s first daycase vitreoretinal service, and set up the first private vitreoretinal service in the country. Zac has significant experience in cataract surgery including complex cataract surgery, for which he specifically receives referrals.
A graduate of the Armed Forces Medical College in India, Zac completed his ophthalmic training at the renowned Aravind Eye Institute and his higher surgical training at The Tennent’s Institute in Glasgow. He has over 90 papers, posters and publications and has a significant contribution to the global academic community. His role as principal investigator in multinational trials has shaped important treatment protocols used in modern ophthalmic care.
Zac’s passion for education extends beyond his clinical work. He leads courses on microsurgical skills and cataract surgery at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and has taught retinal surgery at the European School of Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology. He has written teaching material and modules for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. His training programs at Golden Jubilee Hospital have earned top ratings from trainees and are now being considered a model for training across Scotland.
In addition to his clinical and academic contributions, Zac has held senior leadership roles, including Clinical Director for Ophthalmology at NHS Ayrshire & Arran and Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee at Nuffield Hospital. His leadership in shaping the Standards for Cataract Surgery in Scotland, as requested by Healthcare Improvement Scotland, showcases his commitment to improving care at a national level.
In 2024, he was nominated as a national finalist for Eye Care Professional of the Year by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).
