Orthopaedic Surgery
About
He treats all knee conditions including knee arthritis, knee pain and sprains, Multi-ligament Injuries (ACL,MCL,PCL), Cartilage injuries, Meniscal damage, Patellofemoral instability and pain, Osteoarthritis(realignment procedures), running injuries, sports-related knee injuries, torn ligaments, adolescent injuries and knee preservation procedures such as high tibial osteotomy with a particular focus on both acute injuries and long-term joint health.
He graduated in medicine at Queen's University Belfast in 1988 and went on to complete his orthopaedic training in Belfast. He further enhanced his expertise with a pre-registrar trauma fellowship at Stoke-on-Trent Hospital. Between 1993 to 1999, he undertook specialist orthopaedic training at the Robert Jones and Angus Hunt Hospital (world renowned orthopaedic centre) in Oswestry, where he developed a keen interest in sports-related injuries.
Following his initial training, Mr Tandon pursued further specialisation through fellowships in Australia, Austria, and Germany. He spent a year at the Wakefield Orthopaedic and Sports Injury Clinic in Adelaide, focusing on minimally invasive knee surgery, sports injuries, and joint knee replacements. He also gained valuable experience in Melbourne, working alongside a prominent knee surgeon. Additional fellowships in Salzburg and Wolfsberg expanded his expertise in ski injuries and knee trauma.
Mr Tandon commenced his consultant career in Wolverhampton before joining the University Hospitals of Leicester in August 2002, where he is now a senior consultant. His primary focus is on soft tissue injuries related to sports, particularly those affecting the knee, which he treats using minimally invasive techniques. Since 2002, he has been managing both amateur and professional athletes with knee problems, developing extensive experience in ACL surgery.
As a testament to his expertise, Mr Tandon served as the attending orthopaedic surgeon for the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England. He provides orthopaedic surgical management for numerous prestigious sports teams and clubs, including Leicester Tigers, Leicester City FC, Leicestershire County Cricket, Leicester Riders, Loughborough Lightning and various other professional and amateur organisations across multiple sports.
Mr Tandon's clinical interests extend to cartilage implantation, meniscal transplantation, and the treatment of degenerative knee conditions in younger patients. He employs both modern conservative and surgical approaches in managing these cases. Additionally, he performs conventional total knee replacements, unicompartmental knee replacements, and osteotomies for younger individuals with degenerative knee changes.
Specialising in complex patellar disorders, Mr Tandon runs dedicated clinics in collaboration with physiotherapists, addressing issues such as pain and instability. He also conducts clinics for children and adolescents with sports injuries and patellar problems, working alongside paediatric orthopaedic surgeons.
Beyond his clinical work, Mr Tandon is actively involved in educating medical students and senior orthopaedic trainees at the University Hospitals of Leicester, contributing to the development of future orthopaedic specialists.
