Mr Paul Guyver is a Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon whose career spans military service, elite surgical training, and extensive specialist expertise. He began his medical training at St George’s Hospital Medical School in London, graduating in 1999 before completing his pre-registration posts in Portsmouth. In 2000 he graduated from Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and went on to complete Royal Marines Commando training. As their medical officer, he provided frontline medical support to more than 1,000 Royal Marines during operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Mediterranean. Mr Guyver completed his basic surgical training in Plymouth, gaining broad experience across general and vascular surgery, plastic surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, and urology. He was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2006. From 2008 to 2014 he undertook higher surgical training on the South West Peninsula rotation, achieving Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in 2012. His specialist interest in shoulder and elbow surgery was shaped through prestigious fellowship training at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre in Exeter, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA. He was also awarded the distinguished Watanabe Arthroscopic Shoulder Travelling Fellowship. He was awarded GMC Specialist Registration (Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery) in 2014 and served as a military Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at DMG(SW), Derriford Hospital until 2020.   He is now a full-time NHS Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, specialising in shoulder and elbow surgery.  He is the Training Programme Director (Trauma & Orthopaedics) for the Peninsula Deanery, a reviewer for one scientific journal, a member of the Peninsula Elbow Group and regional Shoulder and Elbow group. Mr Guyver has published and presented widely in Orthopaedics and Trauma and remains active in research and teaching related to shoulder and elbow disorders. Mr Guyver is known for his open, honest, and personal approach to care. He is committed to ensuring that every patient fully understands their diagnosis, treatment options, and likely outcomes. His clinical practice encompasses the full breadth of shoulder and elbow conditions, including primary and revision shoulder replacement, arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, stabilisation procedures, rotator cuff pathology, and soft tissue disorders affecting both joints. He has particular expertise in treating trauma, frozen shoulder, instability, degenerative conditions, and sports-related soft tissue injuries.

"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
