Mr
Mr Kim Hutton
Paediatric Surgery
About
He completed a higher degree for work investigating urothelial cell biology, whilst at the Cancer Research Institute at St James's University Hospital in Leeds, and was awarded 1st prize for presenting his work at the Urological Research Society in January 1993, London.
Mr Hutton completed his Paediatric Surgical training in Leeds and Manchester and undertook a Pediatric Urology Fellowship at the Clark-Morrison Children's Urological Center, Los Angeles, USA in 1996. He was appointed as a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) Cardiff in 1997 and retired from the NHS on 3 June 2019.
During his post at UHW, a tenure of 22 years, he developed services for paediatric urology including urodynamics, neuropathic bladder and renal tract stone disease. There were no paediatric continence nurse specialists in Cardiff when he arrived and he was instrumental in progressing key appointments and developing a team approach to the care of paediatric patients with complex urological needs. He had a close working relationship with colleagues in paediatric nephrology, paediatric radiology, paediatric gastroenterology and paediatric anaesthesia, and this collaboration within a multidisciplinary team he believes led to improved patient outcomes.
Mr Hutton continues to pursue academic interests and help strengthen standards of postgraduate education. He has remained, following retirement from the NHS, an examiner for the Joint Surgical Colleges Fellowship Examination in Urology (an International exit examination in Urology) and was an examiner for the FRCS Urology exit examinations in Paediatric Urology 2007 - 2022. He is a member of the Commissioning Group for Foreskin Condition, The Royal College of Surgeon of England.
He has introduced modern, evidence based treatments of day and nighttime urinary incontinence problems in childhood within a private healthcare setting - for example TENS neuromodulation. Mr Hutton has pubilshed 36 peer reviewed publications and 10 book chapters with the majority on paediatric urology topics.
When not working Mr Hutton enjoys hiking, cycling, swimming, going to the gym, walking, cooking, reading, listening to music and most of all spending quality time with his family and friends.
