Mr James Barraclough is a highly experienced Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon who manages the full spectrum of ENT conditions in both adults and children. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Bristol and completed his basic and higher surgical training in ENT across the West Midlands. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and is fully registered with the General Medical Council.
He has undertaken extensive higher specialist training and now sub-specialises in rhinology and facial plastic surgery. His expertise includes conditions affecting both the internal and external structures of the nose, such as nasal trauma, sports-related injuries, facial pain, sinusitis, nasal polyps, nasal obstruction and allergies.
Mr Barraclough has significant experience in paediatric ENT, having spent several years at Birmingham Children’s Hospital managing complex conditions in children.
His training has also included further specialist experience in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, focusing on advanced endoscopic sinus surgery and facial plastic procedures. He has trained with internationally recognised surgeons including Richard Douglas and Salil Nair in Auckland, and Shahz Ahmed at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. He completed the Dunedin ENT Fellowship in New Zealand and later worked as a Consultant in Whangarei.
In addition to his clinical work, Mr Barraclough holds a Master’s Degree in Medical Science from Keele University, where his research focused on tonsillectomy for recurrent sore throats in children. He has published extensively, authoring more than 25 peer-reviewed papers, and has served as a reviewer for journals including Clinical Otolaryngology and BMJ Open.
He currently leads the Tracheostomy and Laryngectomy Team and serves as Clinical Director for Head and Neck Services in Wolverhampton. He is also the immediate past President of the Young Consultants in Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, a national organisation supporting early-career ENT consultants, and has previously served as a Council Member of ENT UK.
