About Mr Antony Greer
Mr Greer qualified in Medicine from Glasgow University in 1994 and worked in teaching hospitals in Glasgow until 1996 when he gained a place on the highly competitive surgical training rotation at University College Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital. He decided on a career in Trauma and Orthopaedics and moved to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore for his final junior doctor job. Subsequently he won a place on the North Thames Higher Surgical Training Rotation to sub-specialise in Trauma and Orthopaedics. This is a 6 year program culminating in qualification as a fully trained consultant. Mr Greer says he was privileged to work a a number of fantastic institutions including a return to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore as a Registrar, The Royal London Hospital and several hospitals in the East of England including Southend Hospital. As part of the higher surgical training he received he had the opportunity to travel to other hospitals worldwide to gain a wide range of experience and to bring new techniques back to the UK. M any orthopaedic developments have originated in the UK so trainee Consultants are welcomed worldwide by the community. Mr Greer won a fellowship sponsored by the Australian Orthopaedic Association at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia where he worked in the state regional Trauma Centre, furthering his experience in trauma, hip and knee surgery. During his final placement at the Royal London Hospital a job became available at Southend Hospital where he had enjoyed a rewarding year as a registrar. Following a successful interview he was appointed as a Consultant in Southend in 2005 with a special interest in sports injuries, hip and knee problems, arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery and hip and knee replacement. He has been instrumental in developing services at Southend and introducing new techniques such as minimally invasive ligament repairs and reconstruction, joint replacements in younger patients, hip resurfacing, customised knee replacements and hip arthroscopy. Since 2014 he has acted as Clinical Lead which is a role where he hopes to act as a voice for his colleagues to continue to meet the ongoing challenges of the NHS while keeping his patients as the first priority.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
