About Mr Andrew Clarke
Mr Andrew Clarke is a Consultant General, Colorectal, Laparoscopic and Pelvic Floor Surgeon based at Poole Hospital, with a private practice in Poole and Bournemouth. He qualified in Manchester in 1988 and completed his postgraduate surgical training in the North West of England, including posts at major teaching hospitals such as The Christie Hospital Cancer Institute. He was awarded an MD in 2000 for research on tumour blood flow in bowel cancer. After a period of clinical work in the United States, he was appointed Consultant Surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary in 2002 before moving to Poole in 2004, where he played a key role in developing laparoscopic surgery and establishing pelvic floor and minimally invasive surgical services. His clinical practice covers a broad range of general and colorectal surgery, including endoscopy (colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and gastroscopy), haemorrhoid surgery, and hernia repair, with a particular focus on laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques. He has significant expertise in both primary and recurrent hernias, including sports-related groin pain and complex abdominal wall reconstruction. Mr Clarke has developed a national reputation in the management of pelvic floor disorders. His specialist work includes surgical and multidisciplinary treatment of faecal incontinence, constipation, and pelvic organ prolapse. Where conservative treatments are insufficient, he performs advanced procedures such as sacral nerve stimulation, sphincter reconstruction, Sphinkeeper procedures, and prolapse repair. He is also a national trainer in laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy and the STARR procedure. He established one of the UK’s earliest multidisciplinary pelvic floor services, bringing together colorectal surgeons, gynaecologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, physiologists, physiotherapists, and specialist nurses in a coordinated MDT model, which has since developed into a wider Dorset network across multiple hospitals.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
