He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Cambridge before completing medical and surgical training in East Anglia, Swansea, and London. During that period, he also spent two years conducting research on senescence in melanocytes and melanoma, for which he was awarded the Doctor of Medicine degree. Following that, he undertook specialist plastic surgery training in the London Deanery, including fellowships in hand surgery (Singapore), cosmetic reconstructive surgery (London), and as a Poche Fellow in melanoma and surgical oncology at the Melanoma Institute Australia.

Mr MacKenzie Ross became a Consultant Plastic Surgeon with a special interest in Skin Oncology in 2013. He is a member of the skin cancer multidisciplinary teams at Guy's and St Thomas', King's College, and, previously, Queen Elizabeth (Woolwich) Hospitals, and he served as the surgical lead for the London Cancer Alliance Skin Pathway Group. He is also a founding member of the Wellington Hospital's multidisciplinary skin cancer team.
